Chairman of the Board

Guy E. Beatty

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, Mr. Beatty attended schools in the Lynchburg area and in Alexandria, Virginia. He studied law with the LaSalle Extension University. He is Chairman of the Beatty Companies which are involved in the ownership, development, and management of commercial real estate.

Mr. Beatty is on the Board of Governors at the College of Charleston Business School, Charleston, South Carolina. He attends the McLean Baptist Church.

FUMA Affiliation: elected to the Board of Trustees in 1976 and now serving as Trustee Emeritus. Benefactor of the Yeatman Infirmary, Beatty Library, and Snead Hall.

Thomas C. Schuler, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Spinal Surgeon

Dr. Schuler founded The Virginia Spine Institute in 1992 revolutionizing spinal healthcare in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. Through Dr. Schuler’s visionary leadership as the President and Scientific Advisor to The Spinal Research Foundation he is striving to improve spinal healthcare for all Americans. He is the Spine Consultant to the Washington Redskins and frequently treats professional and amateur athletes. He is the Program Director of the Virginia Spine Institute Physician Assistant Fellowship Program.

Dr. Schuler is a Fellow in both the American College of Spine Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. He is a Member in the North American Spine Society and the Young Presidents Organization. He is also a founding member of the Lumbar Spine Study Group.

Dr. Schuler is an expert in non-operative and operative cervical and lumbar spinal surgery. He is an innovator in the field of spinal surgery and a pioneer in the development of non-operative treatment strategies for spinal disorders.

 

Director of Research

Brian R. Subach, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Subach is a spine surgeon and the Director of Research at the Virginia Spine Institute. He is a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of spinal disorders and an active member of the American Association of Neurological Surgery, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Spine Society. He is an invited member of the international Lumbar Spine Study Group and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He lectures extensively regarding the management of complex spinal disorders in both national and international forums.

He is the Director of Research and Board Member for the non-profit Spinal Research Foundation (SRF) and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Spinal Research Foundation (JSRF). He has written 15 book chapters and more than 50 published articles regarding treatment of the spine.

 

Secretary

Mr. Michael H. Howland is a retired career diplomat who currently is founder, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tioga Holdings, Inc., a Reston based holding company that operates four technology and consulting businesses in Northern Virginia. Mr. Howland started his public service career in the U.S. Military and is a Vietnam veteran.

He holds a graduate degree from Georgetown University in International Law and Politics. Mr. Howland was also on the staff of Georgetown University for two years prior to joining the Foreign Service. In the Foreign Service, he served throughout the Middle East, South Asia, Europe, and the former Soviet Union. In 1979 Mr. Howland was one of 52 American diplomats taken hostage by Iranian terrorists and held prisoner for nearly two years. Mr. Howland also serves on the Board of Directors of the Creative Youth Foundation, a Middleburg, VA based organization that helps disadvantaged children find a voice through the performing arts. Mr. Howland enjoys fly fishing for wild trout and training field dogs. Mr. Howland resides outside of Middleburg, Va.


Treasurer

Mr. Andrew Greene is a First Vice President with Merrill Lynch Global Private Client Group and a founding partner of the GMMT Team, meeting financial needs of families, small to mid-size businesses, and not-for-profit organizations. Mr. Greene began his career as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in 1992 and has served as a Resident Manager in three Global Private Client offices.

In 2005 and 2006 he was honored to be named to Virginia Business Magazine’s top 30 Financial Advisors. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and is a Certified Financial Manager. Mr. Greene serves on several other charitable boards including the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute for the Developmentally Disabled where he is Advisory Council President.

In 2004, Mr. Greene was appointed Knight of Magistral Grace – Sovereign Military Order of Malta. He resides in Chevy Chase Maryland with his wife of 21 years and his four children.


National Race Liason

Mr. Raymond F. Pugsley is co-owner of Potomac River Running, Inc., a running/walking specialty store with 8 locations in the Washington, D.C. Metro area. He is a lifelong athlete, most recently winning the RRCA Master’s 10-mile championship at the 2010 Cherry Blossom 10-Miler. In 2003, he helped start Potomac River Running, Inc., a retail running and walking store with the mission of helping customers find the proper athletic footwear/equipment. Through the store, coaching, and event support, Mr. Pugsley has strived to become a part of the local community to help people stay active and healthy.


Board Member

Mr. Kevin M. Burke is the President and CEO of Centuria, which he founded in 2002.  Mr. Burke has guided Centuria through three consecutive years on the Inc. 500 index of America’s fastest growing companies and four consecutive years on the Washington Technology Fast 50.   Prior to founding Centuria, he founded Synapse Incorporated, which grew to over 40 employees in less than twenty-four months.  Before building these companies, he served as a technical resource for MCI, a GS employee within the Department of Health and Human Services, and a United States Marine.  Mr. Burke has been featured in Inc. Magazine and is an executive committee member of the Washington Baltimore Chapter of Young Presidents’ Organization.


Board Member

Dr. William H. Evers, Jr. is President and CEO of Systems, Technology & Science, LLC, which he founded in July 1998.  He is responsible for both setting the strategic direction of the firm and insuring its day-to-day execution. Dr. Evers currently serves as a member of the independent Scientific and Engineering Review Group (iSERG) of the Missile Defense Agency.  Previously, he served as a member of the Defense Science Board Task Force on Tactical Battlefield Communications.  He has previously served as Vice Chair of the Army Science Board, was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Academy of Sciences Board on Army Science and Technology and was a consultant to the Defense Science Board 1993 Summer Study on Global Surveillance.  He has also served as the Chairman of the Laser Device Panel of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense Research and Engineering's High Energy Laser Review Group (HELRG).

Mr. Brian D. Nault is the Chairman, CEO and Co-founder of AOC Applied Technologies Corporation (ATCorp) and BlueWater Federal Solutions, Inc. He is a proven Executive with over 27 years of experience in the fields of financial services, technology and Federal Government contracting. In addition to his family and businesses, Mr. Nault maintains a passion for our “Nation’s future,” our youth. Through his companies, he supports several important charities, including, though not limited to St. Judes Children’s Hospital, the Spinal Research Foundation, Special Olympics and the Redskins Foundation. Additionally, he supports a high school scholarship program and non-profit scholastic organizations.
